Tunisia have appointed experienced French tactician Hervé Renard as their new head coach after dismissing Sabri Lamouchi following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Lamouchi became the first manager to lose his job during the ongoing tournament after a disappointing start to Tunisia’s campaign. The 54-year-old was appointed in January on a contract running until 2028 but managed only one victory in five matches before his departure.

Renard now takes charge of the North African side with the responsibility of reviving their World Cup hopes ahead of crucial Group F clashes against Japan and the Netherlands. Tunisia currently sit bottom of the group with a goal difference of minus four.
The appointment sees one of international football’s most respected tournament coaches return to the World Cup stage.
The 57-year-old built his reputation in Africa by guiding Zambia to a historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2012 before winning another AFCON title with Ivory Coast in 2015, becoming the first coach to win the competition with two different nations.
Renard also gained worldwide recognition at the 2022 FIFA World Cup when he led Saudi Arabia to a remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over eventual champions Argentina in one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

Although Saudi Arabia did not advance beyond the group stage in Qatar, the victory over Argentina cemented Renard’s status as a coach capable of inspiring underdogs against the world’s biggest teams.
His first assignment with Tunisia will be a crucial encounter against Japan, a match that could determine whether the Carthage Eagles can keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey alive.
