Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah made a long-awaited return to competitive football after 391 days on the sidelines, featuring in Olympique Lyonnais’s 4-2 victory over Stade Rennais in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old had been out of action since April 5, 2025, after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that ruled him out for over a year. During that period, Nuamah missed a total of 54 matches for both club and country, making his return a significant milestone in his career.

Introduced as a second-half substitute, Nuamah played the closing minutes of the match at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, marking the end of a long and challenging rehabilitation journey. Though his time on the pitch was brief, his movement and confidence offered encouraging signs for both his club and national team.

His comeback comes at a crucial stage of the season, with Lyon pushing to finish strongly in the league. The club will also benefit from the return of one of their key attacking options as they look to build momentum heading into the final stretch.

Beyond club football, Nuamah’s return is a major boost for the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The winger was an important figure during Ghana’s qualification campaign before his injury setback, contributing pace, creativity, and attacking threat on the flanks. His availability now adds depth and quality to the squad as preparations intensify.

With newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz expected to name his squad in the coming weeks, Nuamah will be aiming to regain full match fitness and secure a place in the team.

Ghana is set to play a series of international friendlies as part of their build-up to the World Cup, providing Nuamah with an opportunity to prove his readiness on the international stage.

The Black Stars are determined to make a strong impact at the tournament, which will be hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Having reached the quarter-finals in 2010, Ghana will be looking to at least match or surpass that historic achievement.

For Nuamah, the focus now shifts to staying fit, building form, and rediscovering the level that made him one of Ghana’s most promising young talents.

After more than a year away from the game, his return represents not just a personal victory, but a timely reinforcement for both club and country ahead of a demanding football calendar.
