Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has been released from custody after the Court of Appeal overturned her conviction and acquitted and discharged her.
The Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu release follows the withdrawal of an application by the Attorney-General seeking to stay the execution of the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
The Court of Appeal on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, struck out the application after the State formally withdrew it, clearing the way for the former MASLOC boss to regain her freedom.
Court clears way for Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu release
Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu had remained in custody despite the appellate court’s decision to acquit and discharge her, following the State’s attempt to stay the execution of the judgment.
However, with the Attorney-General withdrawing the application, there was no longer a legal barrier arising from that application to prevent the appellate court’s decision from taking effect.
Her release comes nearly two weeks after the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction handed down by the Accra High Court.
The Attorney-General has indicated that the State intends to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision at the Supreme Court.
Sedina’s MASLOC tenure and prosecution
Tamakloe-Attionu served as MASLOC CEO from November 2013 to January 2017.
She was subsequently prosecuted on 78 counts involving allegations including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the State, money laundering, improper payment of public funds and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.
The allegations related to her management of MASLOC during her tenure at the institution.
In April 2024, the Accra High Court convicted her and sentenced her to 10 years in prison in absentia.
She was not present in Ghana at the time of the conviction.
Return to Ghana and legal challenge
Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu returned to Ghana in June 2026 after being extradited from the United States.
Following her arrival, she was taken into custody to begin serving the sentence imposed by the High Court.
Her lawyers subsequently challenged the conviction before the Court of Appeal, seeking to have the judgment overturned.
The appellate court eventually ruled in her favour, acquitting and discharging her and effectively overturning the earlier conviction.
State considers Supreme Court appeal
Although the Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged Tamakloe-Attionu, the legal dispute may not yet be completely over.
The Attorney-General has indicated that the State intends to pursue the matter at the Supreme Court.
However, the withdrawal of the application seeking a stay of execution means the Court of Appeal’s acquittal and discharge can take effect while the State considers or pursues its further legal options.
For now, the former MASLOC CEO has been released from custody following the latest development in the case.
Her release marks a significant turn in a legal battle that has continued from her initial prosecution and conviction to her eventual return to Ghana and successful appeal before the Court of Appeal.
