The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has rejected claims of tension between the institution and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) following the decision by BoG Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiamah to stop serving personally on the GoldBod Board.
GoldBod said the Governor’s decision should not be interpreted as evidence of disagreements between the two institutions or problems within the gold-buying organisation.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, and signed by its Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, GoldBod described such suggestions as false and said they stem from a misunderstanding of the GoldBod Act and the circumstances surrounding Dr Asiamah’s decision.
According to GoldBod, Dr Asiamah nominated his second deputy, Matilda Asante-Asiedu, to represent him on the Board because of his busy schedule.
The institution said the nomination is permitted under Section 4(e) of the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which provides for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana or a representative of the Governor who is not below the rank of Director to serve on the GoldBod Board.
GoldBod explained that the arrangement is not unusual, noting that other government officials serving on the Board have also nominated representatives because of their official responsibilities.
The institution cited the Finance Minister as an example, saying he nominated Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem to represent him on the Board from the beginning because of his busy schedule.
It also noted that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, initially served personally on the Board before nominating the Chief Director of the Ministry, Marcus Haligah, as his representative in January 2026.
GoldBod said Dr Asiamah initially chose to serve personally on the Board but subsequently wrote to the Board on May 11, 2026, nominating Matilda Asante-Asiedu to represent him.
The institution therefore maintained that his decision to no longer sit personally on the Board does not indicate any disagreement with GoldBod.
GoldBod said there is also no ongoing conflict between the two institutions, stressing that it continues to work closely with the Bank of Ghana.
The institution described the BoG as an important partner in its operations, particularly in relation to foreign exchange generation for the country.
GoldBod’s clarification comes amid public discussion surrounding Dr Asiamah’s departure from the Board and speculation about the relationship between the two institutions.
However, GoldBod insists that the Governor’s decision was simply an administrative arrangement that allows his deputy to represent him while he focuses on his responsibilities at the central bank.
