Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has opened up about the breakdown of his once-close friendship with Nigerian Grammy-winning artiste Burna Boy, claiming false allegations spread by former members of his team caused the rift.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Shatta Wale revealed that Burna Boy was one of the few Nigerian artistes who personally contacted him before visiting Ghana, asking him to receive him at the airport.
According to the “On God” hitmaker, he welcomed Burna Boy warmly, ensuring he enjoyed a comfortable stay in Ghana.
“I was treating Burna Boy in Ghana like a king. I gave him a house, gave him cars, anything he needed. He wasn’t spending money in Ghana,” Shatta Wale said.
Alleged false rumours
Shatta Wale claimed the relationship deteriorated after he dismissed several members of his management team.
According to him, the disgruntled former associates allegedly began spreading false stories to damage his relationships with influential people.
He alleged that the former team members accused him of having inappropriate relationships with the wives and girlfriends of some of his wealthy associates.
One of those rumours, he claimed, reached Burna Boy.
“They told Burna Boy that I was sleeping with his girl he brought to Ghana, and he just believed it,” he alleged.
Attempts to reconnect
Shatta Wale said he only realised Burna Boy had accepted the allegations after repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered.
He revealed that he even reached out to Burna Boy’s mother, whom he described as family, hoping she would help him reconnect with the Nigerian superstar.
Despite his efforts, he said he never had the opportunity to explain his side of the story.
No bad blood
Although disappointed by how events unfolded, Shatta Wale insisted he still has love and admiration for Burna Boy.
He said he continues to celebrate Burna Boy’s achievements and regularly follows his music career with pride.
“I still love him. I watch his streams and I’m proud of him. That’s my brother,” he said.
Shatta Wale also stressed that he would never have betrayed Burna Boy‘s trust.
“I thank God that God has put Burna somewhere, but it hurts me that he didn’t listen to me to explain what really happened. I could never do that to his girlfriend because he’s my brother.”
A lesson in friendship
Reflecting on the experience, the award-winning musician said the incident has made him more careful about the people he keeps around him.
He explained that he now maintains a much smaller circle of trusted friends to avoid similar situations in the future.
Despite years of silence between the two artistes, Shatta Wale ended his remarks by wishing Burna Boy continued success, maintaining that he still respects the Nigerian superstar and hopes the misunderstanding can one day be resolved.
