The National Theatre renovation is set to receive a major boost through a partnership between the Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China, with plans underway to modernise the iconic cultural facility and improve its capacity to support Ghanaian arts and culture.
Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, disclosed the development during the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026.
According to the minister, the partnership forms part of government’s broader efforts to restore the National Theatre to a high standard and reposition it as a world-class centre for the promotion, development and preservation of Ghanaian culture.
National Theatre renovation to receive Chinese support
The National Theatre renovation follows a comprehensive assessment of the facility conducted in 2025 to determine the extent of work required to restore and modernise the building.
The assessment examined the theatre’s infrastructure, functionality and technical facilities, with the findings expected to guide the proposed renovation programme.
Gomashie explained that following discussions between the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and the Chinese government, a high-level Chinese delegation visited the National Theatre to assess its condition and identify areas requiring intervention.
She said the proposed project is expected to significantly improve the theatre’s infrastructure while enhancing its technical capabilities.
The minister stressed that the collaboration demonstrates the long-standing relationship between Ghana and China, particularly in the cultural sector.
Ghana National Theatre to receive modern upgrades
The planned National Theatre renovation is expected to focus on restoring the facility and improving its ability to host major cultural, artistic and entertainment productions.
