Ghana’s passport has recorded a major improvement in global travel rankings after climbing seven places in the latest 2026 Henley Passport Index, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s strongest passports.

According to the newly released rankings, the Ghanaian passport now ranks 67th globally, granting holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 67 destinations around the world.

The latest development marks a significant rise from Ghana’s previous 74th position in the 2025 rankings. The improvement also places Ghana ahead of Nigeria, Rwanda, and more than 41 African countries in terms of global travel access.

Nigeria ranked 89th globally in the same report, with Nigerian passport holders having access to 44 destinations without obtaining a visa beforehand.

The Henley Passport Index is regarded as one of the world’s most authoritative passport ranking systems. It evaluates passports from 199 countries and territories based on access to 227 travel destinations worldwide.

The rankings rely heavily on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), combined with additional research conducted by Henley & Partners.

The index is updated regularly to reflect changes in visa policies, diplomatic agreements, border restrictions, and international travel regulations.

Ghana’s improved standing reflects the country’s growing diplomatic influence and stronger international relations efforts in recent years. It also highlights increasing mobility opportunities for Ghanaian travellers, students, entrepreneurs, and business professionals.

The rise in ranking comes at a time when Ghana has been pursuing policies aimed at strengthening international cooperation and simplifying travel processes. Recently, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the approval of a new electronic visa (e-Visa) policy designed to make travel procedures easier for visitors entering Ghana.

Industry observers believe such measures could further improve Ghana’s global mobility standing in future rankings.

Within Africa, Mauritius maintained its position as the continent’s most powerful passport. The Mauritian passport ranked 25th globally, offering access to 147 destinations without requiring a prior visa.

Other African countries that performed relatively well included Seychelles and South Africa, while several nations across the continent continue to face limited travel access due to diplomatic and economic challenges.

Globally, passports from countries such as Singapore, Japan, and several European nations continue to dominate the rankings due to extensive visa-free agreements and strong diplomatic ties.

For many Ghanaians, the improved ranking is expected to ease international travel for tourism, education, trade, and business opportunities. It may also strengthen confidence among investors and international partners regarding Ghana’s global standing.

Travel and immigration analysts say stronger passports are often linked to stable diplomatic relations, economic credibility, and effective international cooperation.

Although the Ghanaian passport still trails far behind the world’s top-ranking travel documents, the latest rise signals positive momentum and suggests further improvement may be possible in the coming years.

The development has already generated excitement among many citizens online, with some describing it as a sign of Ghana’s growing influence on the international stage.

As global mobility becomes increasingly important in business, education, and migration, Ghana’s improved passport ranking represents an encouraging milestone for the country and its citizens.
