Award-winning Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has revealed that he became tired of repeatedly winning the Highlife Artiste of the Year category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), explaining that he does not want to be defined by only one genre throughout his career.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Prime on Wednesday, May 6, the “Angela” hitmaker opened up about his thoughts on the recognition he has received over the years as a highlife artiste.

According to Kuami Eugene, although he appreciates the success and recognition that came with dominating the category, he believes his music career extends far beyond highlife alone.

During the interview, the artiste disclosed that he received two nominations at this year’s TGMA. However, he admitted that he was not even fully aware of the categories he had been nominated in until the host mentioned them during the discussion.

When asked directly whether he had become tired of winning the Highlife Artiste of the Year award, Kuami Eugene answered honestly.

“I was tired two years ago because I wanted somebody to win some. Yeah, because I didn’t want to be known for just Highlife,” he stated.

The singer explained that while highlife music remains one of the genres most associated with his brand, he considers himself a versatile musician capable of exploring multiple sounds and styles.

According to him, his ultimate goal is not to be boxed into a single category but rather to be recognised for consistently producing quality music across different genres.

“I want to be known for producing good music,” he added.

The conversation also touched on the ongoing discussions surrounding the relationship between Highlife and Afrobeats within Ghana’s music industry. Over the years, debates have emerged over whether younger artistes are abandoning traditional highlife sounds in favour of more globally appealing Afrobeats influences.

Sharing his perspective, Kuami Eugene maintained that his music cannot be limited to one style because he actively experiments with different genres.

“I make Highlife, Afrobeat, Afropop, Drill, and Dancehall music. It’s me. I make all kinds of music, but the one I’m known for, because I’ve made a couple of them, is Highlife. But I make other genres as well,” he explained.

Known for hit songs such as “Wish Me Well,” “Open Gate,” “Angela,” and “Monica,” Kuami Eugene has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s most versatile musicians. His ability to blend melodies, songwriting, and production across different genres has earned him a loyal fan base both locally and internationally.

His comments have since sparked conversations among music fans online, with many praising his versatility while others insist that his strongest identity still lies in highlife music.

As the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards approaches, Kuami Eugene remains one of the most talked-about artistes in the industry, continuing to evolve musically while challenging perceptions about genre limitations in Ghanaian music.
