American actor Michael B. Jordan has made history at the Academy Awards after winning his first-ever Oscar for Best Actor for his dual role as twins Smoke and Stack in the 2025 film Sinners.
The landmark victory marks a defining moment in the actor’s career after years of critically acclaimed performances that had previously gone unrecognised by the Oscars.
Jordan’s win came during the 2026 edition of the Academy Awards, where Sinners emerged as one of the standout films of the night. The actor delivered an emotional acceptance speech that quickly resonated with audiences around the world, revealing a deeply personal detail about the moment.
According to Jordan, his father had travelled all the way from Ghana to witness the historic achievement in person. Visibly overwhelmed by the significance of the moment, the actor paused on stage before expressing his gratitude.
“Man, God is good,” he told the audience as he reflected on the journey that led to his long-awaited Oscar win.
Jordan also used the moment to pay tribute to filmmaker Ryan Coogler, the director of Sinners and one of his closest collaborators in Hollywood. The partnership between the two has produced several major films over the years, including Fruitvale Station, Creed, and the global blockbuster Black Panther. Their continued collaboration has been widely credited with shaping Jordan’s career and elevating his status as one of Hollywood’s leading actors.

Their groundbreaking achievements, Jordan said, opened doors for a new generation of Black actors seeking recognition on the world’s biggest stage for film.
The actor also used his acceptance speech to express appreciation to the fans who supported Sinners at the box office. According to him, the audience played a crucial role in the film’s success.
“I want to say thank you to everybody at home who went to see the movie once, twice, three, four times. You made this movie what it is. I love you,” he said.
Jordan’s victory places him among a select group of Black actors who have won the Best Actor award in the history of the Oscars. The milestone further cements his legacy as one of the most influential performers of his generation.
The recognition has been widely described as long overdue by many film critics and fans, who point to his powerful performances in films such as Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther. Despite earning widespread praise for those roles, Jordan had previously been overlooked by the Academy.
In addition to his Hollywood achievements, Jordan has also shown admiration for Ghana and its culture. In a 2024 interview on The Culture Joint podcast, the actor spoke warmly about the country, describing it as a place rich in history, vibrant culture and welcoming people.
He also expressed his desire to visit Ghana in the future, a wish that now carries added significance following the emotional revelation that his father travelled from the country to witness his Oscar triumph.
