Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that 2026 could mark the end of his professional football career, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner saying he wants to leave behind a “spectacular legacy” after 25 years at the highest level.
The 41-year-old Portuguese superstar made the revelation in an interview with Vogue, raising the possibility that the current season could be his final campaign as a professional footballer.

“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said.
The statement has sparked fresh discussions about the potential end of one of the most decorated careers in football history.
Ronaldo opens up about life after football
Ronaldo admitted that retirement would represent a significant change after spending more than two decades dedicating himself to the sport.
The Al-Nassr forward said he has already begun planning for life beyond football and has several interests that could keep him occupied once he eventually steps away from the game.
“I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard,” he said.
Ronaldo also acknowledged that leaving football could create a major void in his life, making it important for him to find different ways to remain active and entertained.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
He said his plans include travelling, watching and playing padel, while also enjoying the rewards of the sacrifices he and his family have made throughout his career.
“And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned, what we’ve earned.”
A remarkable 25-year football career
Ronaldo began his professional career with Sporting CP in 2002 before establishing himself as one of the greatest players of his generation.
His career has included memorable spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus before his move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
During his career, Ronaldo has won five Ballon d’Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles and numerous domestic trophies.
He has also enjoyed international success with Portugal, helping the country win the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
The forward has continued to score at an extraordinary rate well into his 40s and is approaching the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals for club and country.

Ronaldo prepares for possible final chapter
Despite hinting at retirement, Ronaldo remains focused on his football commitments with Al-Nassr and will continue playing during the current season.
He has not announced a specific retirement date, meaning his comments leave open the possibility that his career could continue beyond 2026.
For now, however, the football world is preparing for the potential final chapter of an extraordinary career.
If Ronaldo does retire this year, his departure would mark the end of a 25-year journey that transformed him from a promising youngster at Sporting CP into one of the most recognisable and successful footballers in history.
