Ghana’s Black Stars secured a 24th-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their best performance at football’s biggest tournament since reaching the quarter-finals of the 2010 edition in South Africa.
The final rankings were confirmed following the conclusion of the expanded 48-team tournament, which saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy. England finished third after beating France in the third-place playoff.
For Ghana, the tournament represented a major step forward after disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. Under head coach Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars progressed beyond the group stage to reach the newly introduced Round of 32, restoring confidence in the national team’s ability to compete on the global stage.
The Black Stars also finished ahead of several respected football nations in the final standings, including Ecuador (25th), South Africa (26th), Sweden (27th), Austria (28th), Algeria (30th), and Senegal (31st).
Ghana’s journey to the knockout stage
Ghana was drawn into a difficult Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto. Young midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi emerged as the hero, scoring a dramatic late winner to hand Ghana all three points.
In their second group match, Ghana produced one of the tournament’s strongest defensive performances by holding European giants England to a goalless draw in Boston. The result significantly boosted the team’s chances of progressing to the knockout rounds.
The final group game ended in a 2-1 defeat to Croatia, leaving Ghana third in the group. However, thanks to FIFA’s expanded World Cup format, the Black Stars advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Colombia ends Ghana’s World Cup dream
Ghana’s memorable campaign came to an end in the Round of 32, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City.
Colombian winger Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, and despite creating several opportunities, Ghana could not find an equaliser.
Although the defeat ended the Black Stars’ World Cup journey, the team’s overall performance received praise from football fans and analysts, who highlighted the squad’s discipline, resilience and defensive organisation throughout the tournament.

Finishing 24th in the world represents a significant achievement for Ghanaian football and signals progress after years of inconsistent performances on the international stage.
