The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged residents of Accra to work from home following severe overnight rainfall that caused widespread flooding and brought parts of the capital to a standstill.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, the Minister warned that weather forecasts indicate more heavy rainfall is expected, increasing the risk of further flooding across the city.

According to him, information from the Ghana Meteorological Agency suggests additional rain systems moving from neighbouring Togo could worsen the already difficult situation.
“Based on what the meteorological department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please, stay home, work from home,” he said.
Mr Muntaka advised workers who had not yet left their homes to remain indoors and work remotely wherever possible. He also encouraged those already at their workplaces to stay put until conditions improve instead of attempting to travel through flooded roads.
The Interior Minister further appealed to both public and private sector employers to activate flexible working arrangements to ensure business continuity while safeguarding employees’ safety.
He noted that organisations should rely on virtual meetings for non-essential engagements, while urgent meetings could be postponed until weather conditions improve.
“Private and public meetings that are not too urgent, we can have them on Zoom, and those that are very urgent, we can postpone them,” he stated.
The appeal comes as emergency response teams continue rescue and relief operations across flood-affected communities in Accra, where several roads have become impassable due to rising water levels and heavy traffic congestion.
Mr Muntaka also commended the efforts of emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service, for their swift response to the unfolding situation.

He urged the various agencies to strengthen collaboration and coordinate their operations effectively to provide timely assistance to affected residents.
“I want to thank NADMO, the navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police and all the emergency teams for the work they have already started doing. Please be connected to each other. If a call comes to the National Fire Service and you think it is something you need to link them to NADMO, don’t say this is not for us. Let us work together and operationalise the system as one unit,” he said.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather situation and have advised the public to avoid flooded roads and waterways while remaining alert for further updates as more rainfall is expected throughout the day.
