FDA Seizes Unregistered Products at Porials Pitch 3 Event in Accra

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated several unregistered products during an enforcement operation at the Porials Pitch 3 event held in Accra on Saturday, April 18.

The exercise, which took place at Ghud Park, formed part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to protect public health and ensure that consumers are not exposed to potentially harmful or unapproved products.

The event itself attracted a large turnout, with vendors and entrepreneurs showcasing a wide range of goods, particularly in the areas of cosmetics, skincare, and consumables.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, April 19, the FDA explained that the operation was conducted as part of its routine surveillance activities.

During the inspection, the Enforcement Team identified multiple products that had not been registered in line with Ghana’s regulatory requirements, leading to their immediate confiscation.

According to the Authority, the sale and distribution of unregistered products pose serious risks to public health.

Such items have not undergone the necessary checks to verify their safety, quality, and effectiveness, making them potentially dangerous for consumers who may be unaware of the risks involved.

The FDA emphasised that all products, especially those intended for human consumption or application on the body, must be properly registered and approved before being introduced onto the market.

This process ensures that the products meet the required standards and do not pose harm to users.

Porials Pitch 3, hosted by popular Snapchat influencer Dulcie Boateng, has quickly become a notable platform for small businesses and vendors to promote their products to a wider audience.

The event brought together a diverse mix of entrepreneurs, many of whom are part of Ghana’s growing youth-driven business community.

However, the FDA’s intervention highlights the importance of regulatory compliance, even within creative and fast-growing marketplaces.

While such platforms provide valuable opportunities for exposure and sales, authorities insist that all vendors must adhere strictly to the laws governing product registration and safety.

Although the FDA did not disclose the exact types or quantities of products seized during the operation, it reiterated its commitment to intensifying monitoring efforts across the country.

The Authority noted that similar enforcement exercises will continue to be carried out at public gatherings, markets, and commercial centres where large numbers of consumers are present.

The move also serves as a caution to vendors who may attempt to bypass regulatory processes in a bid to quickly enter the market. The FDA warned that it will not hesitate to take action against individuals or businesses found violating its guidelines.

For consumers, the development is a reminder to remain vigilant when purchasing products, particularly from open markets and events.

The FDA continues to encourage the public to check for proper certification and registration labels before buying any consumable or cosmetic item.

As Ghana’s entrepreneurial space continues to expand, the balance between innovation and regulation remains critical.

The FDA’s actions at Porials Pitch 3 underscore its broader mission to ensure that while businesses thrive, public health and safety are never compromised.
