Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a day after he was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command.

The former boxer is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026, as police investigations into the alleged threat continue.
The case follows a video circulating on social media in which Ayitey Powers was allegedly seen making threats against Mr Ampofo Ankrah. The former boxer reportedly reported himself to the police after receiving an invitation from the Accra Regional Police Headquarters regarding the video.
He was subsequently arrested, detained and processed for court.
The development comes after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for Ayitey Powers to be arrested and prosecuted over the alleged conduct.
The committee described the alleged threat as unacceptable and called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
The GBIMC has also initiated separate disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers. The outcome of that process could have further implications for his standing within Ghana’s boxing fraternity.
Ayitey Powers is a well-known figure in Ghanaian boxing, having built a significant following during his professional career. His involvement in the current case has therefore attracted considerable attention within the country’s sporting community.

The alleged incident involving Yaw Ampofo Ankrah comes amid ongoing discussions about the administration and development of sports in Ghana.
However, the details surrounding the alleged threat remain subject to police investigations and the ongoing court process.
The Ghana Police Service has urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information while investigations continue.
Ayitey Powers’ remand is not a determination of guilt, and the allegations against him will be subject to the due process of the law.
The former boxer is expected to return to the Dansoman Circuit Court on September 2, when further developments in the case are expected.
