Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has revealed that her decision to pursue secular music came as a surprise to her family because of their strong Christian upbringing and close ties to Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM on Tuesday, May 26, the singer disclosed that her family initially believed she would eventually become a gospel artiste instead of entering the secular music industry.

According to Sista Afia, she was raised in a home where serving God and living a Christian lifestyle were strongly encouraged. Because of this, many family members expected her to use her talent for gospel music rather than secular songs.
“My family have always been trained in the way of God, and they love God. And so they didn’t expect me to be a secular artiste but rather a gospel artiste,” she said during the interview.
The singer explained that even during the early stages of her career, many people assumed she would eventually transition into gospel music because of her appearance and style at the time.
However, she admitted that things later changed as she began to fully understand the direction she wanted her music career to take.
According to Sista Afia, life sometimes requires people to adjust and make certain choices in order to achieve their goals and ambitions.
“Sometimes, you have to act in a particular way to get what you want,” she stated.
During the interview, the host also asked whether Archbishop Duncan-Williams had ever expressed concern about her songs, performances or lifestyle as a secular artiste.
In response, Sista Afia dismissed the suggestion and insisted that there had never been any complaints or issues from the renowned preacher regarding her career choices.
The musician also pointed out that she is not the only member of the family involved in entertainment outside ministry and gospel music.
She mentioned her cousin Dee Wills as another family member pursuing his own path in the entertainment industry.
“Even his son, who’s my cousin, Dee Wills, is out there doing his thing, so how much more me?” she said.
Sista Afia further clarified that although many people are aware of her connection to the Duncan-Williams family, she prefers not to constantly talk about it publicly.
According to her, she wants her success and recognition to come from her talent, consistency and hard work rather than family associations.

Over the years, Sista Afia has established herself as one of Ghana’s most recognised female musicians with several hit songs and collaborations to her name.
Despite facing criticism and public scrutiny at certain stages of her career, she has remained relevant in Ghana’s music industry and continues to enjoy support from fans across the country.
The singer also hinted at a possible future collaboration with Dee Wills, stating that the right timing would determine when the project eventually happens.
Her comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with many fans praising her honesty about balancing family expectations with personal ambitions in the entertainment industry.
