Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to submit his squad for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
The Portuguese coach has been given a contract extension to continue leading the senior national team after guiding Ghana to a Round of 32 finish at the FIFA World Cup.
According to GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, Queiroz has already been working on his squad selection and is expected to submit the list soon.
“He [Queiroz] will announce the squad before he arrives but he is working,” Asante Twum told 3Sports.
“He has been working since we ended the World Cup. He will soon submit the squad list and then we will make it public.”
The GFA official added that Queiroz is expected to return to Ghana to complete preparations ahead of the qualifiers.
“He will come back home [Ghana], fine-tune the petty things and then we can begin preparations for the AFCON qualifiers,” he said.
Ghana’s AFCON Qualifying Campaign
The Black Stars will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with a difficult fixture against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24.
Ghana will then face The Gambia three days later as the team begins its campaign to secure a place at the next continental tournament.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C, alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
Ghana will be determined to secure qualification after missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The failure to qualify for the 2025 tournament was particularly significant as it marked the first time Ghana had missed the continental showpiece since 2004.
Queiroz Faces Important Task
Queiroz will now be tasked with rebuilding momentum around the national team and ensuring Ghana returns to the AFCON after the disappointing 2025 qualifying campaign.
The upcoming fixtures against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia will provide the Portuguese coach with an early opportunity to assess his squad and establish the foundations for the qualification campaign.
The GFA is expected to make the squad public after receiving Queiroz’s final list.
With preparations set to begin soon, attention will now turn to the players selected to represent Ghana in the crucial 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars will be hoping for a strong start in Group C as they seek to reclaim their place among Africa’s leading football nations.
