Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has joined Sheffield United on a free transfer, with the EFL Championship club confirming the signing on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old forward has signed a one-year contract with the Blades after leaving Leicester City in July following the expiration of his deal.
Ayew now returns to the Championship, where he will look to use his experience and versatility to help Sheffield United improve their fortunes after a difficult start to the season.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed his delight at securing the services of the experienced Ghanaian international.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market and things did move quite quickly so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” Wilder said.
The manager highlighted Ayew’s extensive experience at the highest level of English football and his leadership qualities with the Ghana national team.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree,” he added.
Wilder also pointed to Ayew’s previous Championship experience and his ability to operate in multiple attacking positions.
“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options,” he said.
Ayew Brings Premier League Experience
Ayew brings more than a decade of experience in English football to Sheffield United.
The Ghanaian has played for several Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
His experience at both domestic and international level is expected to provide valuable leadership to a Sheffield United side that has struggled to find consistency early in the new campaign.
The Blades have managed just one victory from their opening five games, leaving Wilder keen to strengthen his squad with experienced players capable of making an immediate impact.
Wilder believes Ayew can follow in the footsteps of other experienced free-agent signings who made positive contributions to the club last season.
“We used the free market to great effect last season, and we believe Jordan can come in have an impact here just like Pat (Bamford) and Jaïro (Riedewald) did,” Wilder said.

For Ayew, the move represents an opportunity to begin a new chapter following his departure from Leicester City.
The forward has established himself as one of Ghana’s most experienced active footballers and has been a key figure for the Black Stars for many years.
His leadership, work rate and ability to play across the front line could prove important as Sheffield United seek to improve their position in the Championship.
