President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and long-term mitigation efforts following severe flooding in parts of Accra and other communities across southern Ghana.
The directive comes after hours of torrential rainfall caused widespread flooding, leaving homes submerged, roads impassable, and hundreds of residents affected.

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government said the funds had been approved to provide immediate assistance to victims while also strengthening measures to reduce the impact of future floods.
According to the statement, GH¢150 million of the allocation will be used to finance emergency relief operations, including humanitarian assistance for flood victims and support for affected communities.
The remaining GH¢150 million will be invested in flood mitigation projects aimed at improving drainage systems and implementing measures to minimise the recurrence of flooding in vulnerable areas.
President Mahama has also directed the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies engaged in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The additional security personnel are expected to assist with evacuation efforts, rescue operations, traffic management, and the distribution of relief items to affected communities.

Earlier in the day, President Mahama conducted an aerial inspection of flood-hit areas to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the heavy rains.
Following the assessment, he announced a series of immediate interventions aimed at protecting lives and property while accelerating efforts to improve the country’s flood prevention infrastructure.
The government has assured the public that all relevant agencies remain on high alert and will continue working together to provide relief to affected residents and implement lasting solutions to address recurring flooding in Accra and other flood-prone communities.
