Award-winning Nigerian actor Deyemi Okanlawon has shared an emotional account of the challenges he faced during his early years in the film industry, revealing that he once spent an entire night dancing at an awards after-party because he could not afford a hotel room.
The Nollywood star made the revelation while accepting the Best African Collaboration award for his role in the movie Sukura at the 15th Ghana Movie Awards held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Reflecting on his journey, Okanlawon said the moment represented a full-circle achievement in his career. He dedicated the award to dreamers across Africa who continue to pursue their ambitions despite challenges and setbacks.
“Thank God for the gift of storytelling that we all share here today,” he said during his acceptance speech.
“This award goes to every single person who has ever dreamt of being great,” he added.
The actor went on to recount his first visit to Ghana for the Ghana Movie Awards in 2015. According to him, financial difficulties at the time left him without enough money to book a hotel room after arriving in Accra for the event.
Rather than allowing the situation to discourage him, he chose to remain at the official after-party and danced throughout the night until morning. He explained that staying awake until daylight enabled him to make his scheduled return flight to Lagos without needing accommodation.
The revelation drew admiration from many attendees, highlighting the sacrifices and perseverance often required to succeed in the entertainment industry.
The 2026 Ghana Movie Awards marked Okanlawon’s third appearance at the prestigious event. Winning the Best African Collaboration award for Sukura represented a significant milestone, transforming a venue that once reminded him of financial hardship into a stage for celebration and recognition.

His story has since resonated with many fans on social media, with several praising his determination and resilience. Many described his journey as a powerful reminder that success often comes after years of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in one’s dreams.
For Okanlawon, the award was more than a career achievement—it was proof that persistence and hard work can eventually turn difficult moments into inspiring success stories.
