Police Seize 152 Bales of Suspected Cannabis at Assokor Barrier

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects after intercepting two trucks loaded with 152 bales of suspected cannabis at the Assokor police barrier near Shama.

The operation, which took place on the Shama Municipality–Takoradi highway, was confirmed by police on 23 February 2026. Officers on routine duty stopped a Kia truck at the Assokor barrier and discovered a large consignment of compressed plant material suspected to be cannabis.

Following initial questioning, the first suspect reportedly led officers to a second truck parked at Nkrofo Junction. Upon inspection, the second vehicle was also found to be carrying similar substances.

Police officials indicated that the two vehicles together contained a substantial quantity of the suspected narcotics. The trucks were subsequently offloaded and examined, revealing approximately 152 large bales. Each bale reportedly contained an estimated 82 compressed parcels wrapped in yellow packaging.

Authorities disclosed that the suspects attempted to bribe the officers with GH₵69,000 in exchange for the release of one of the individuals involved. However, the officers declined the offer and proceeded with standard enforcement procedures.

Superintendent of Police Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Head of Public Affairs for the Western Regional Police Command, confirmed that the officers handled the matter professionally and treated it with the seriousness it deserved.

The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are working to determine the source and intended destination of the suspected cannabis, as well as the roles played by each individual in the transportation process.

The seizure underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and prevent illegal substances from reaching communities. Police say the rejection of the bribe demonstrates their continued commitment to professionalism and integrity in carrying out their duties.

Similar operations in the Western Region have resulted in arrests and seizures in recent years, as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on narcotics trade along major highways and transit routes.
