Ghanaian musician Kwame Nsiah-Apau, popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, has revealed that he turned down an unexpected offer to become the running mate to Alan Kyerematen during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on Tuesday, April 21, the award-winning rapper described the moment as both surprising and deeply humbling, noting that he never imagined being considered for such a high-profile political role.

According to him, the proposal came from the team behind the Movement for Change, who had outlined a detailed and structured set of criteria for selecting a suitable running mate. These requirements included possessing at least a master’s degree, being well-educated, married with children, having no criminal record, and maintaining a strong social media presence with over one million followers.
Reflecting on the criteria, Okyeame Kwame admitted that he felt uniquely positioned among potential candidates.
“When I checked all these, I believed I was the only person who qualified,” he stated, highlighting his confidence in meeting the outlined standards.
Despite this, the musician revealed that he made the difficult decision to decline the offer after careful consideration. He explained that the choice was not taken lightly, as he consulted extensively with his family and close associates before arriving at a final decision.
At the heart of his decision, he said, was his long-standing personal mission to promote Ghana through his music, cultural advocacy, and creative work. Entering active politics, he noted, would have shifted his focus away from that purpose.
“I thought about it, spoke to my family and even some leaders, but at the end, I had to decline because my aim is to promote Ghana and not do anything political,” he explained.
Okyeame Kwame also pointed to his mental preparedness as a key factor. According to him, he did not feel ready to take on the immense responsibility and pressure that comes with national political leadership.
The revelation has sparked conversation among fans and political observers alike, with many praising his honesty and self-awareness. Others have expressed curiosity about what such a partnership might have meant for Ghana’s political landscape, especially given his influence and strong public image.
Although he declined the offer, the rapper expressed deep appreciation to Alan Kyerematen for the recognition, describing it as a significant honour that he does not take for granted.

“I was so, so happy to be honoured by such an entity like Alan Kyerematen. I had to call him to decline because I wasn’t mentally ready for that,” he concluded.
The disclosure sheds light on the increasing intersection between entertainment and politics in Ghana, where influential public figures are often considered for leadership roles due to their reach and impact. However, Okyeame Kwame’s decision underscores the importance of clarity in purpose and readiness when it comes to national service.
While he remains firmly rooted in his music and advocacy work, the revelation adds another dimension to his public persona—one that reflects not just influence, but thoughtful restraint in the face of opportunity.
