Diana Hopeson has revealed that she fled her first marriage after enduring physical abuse and death threats, including a terrifying threat by her husband to shoot both her and himself.
The gospel singer and former MUSIGA president made the disclosure during an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, where she reflected on the difficult experience and how she eventually found healing.
Diana Hopeson recalls violent marriage
Diana said the abuse became increasingly severe, with her husband beating her with a belt and leaving her bleeding from the mouth.
She also recalled an incident where her husband threatened to crash their car, while his behaviour later escalated to the point where he made arrangements to obtain a gun.
The situation eventually convinced her that remaining in the marriage could cost her life.
“I was like, no, I need to run for my life.”
‘I was bleeding from my mouth’
According to Diana, she initially struggled to understand what was happening because she did not know that her husband was experiencing a mental health crisis, which was later identified as bipolar disorder.
She said she sought assistance from church leaders and relatives but continued to face difficulties within the marriage.
Another violent incident eventually became the breaking point.
“I was bleeding from my mouth. It was just too much.”
Diana said she finally made the decision to leave the marriage after recognising that her safety was at serious risk.
Diana Hopeson opens up about lasting trauma
Although Diana has since moved forward from the experience, she revealed that the abuse left emotional scars that lasted for years.
She said she became easily startled by doors opening and experienced intense emotional pain whenever she heard her former husband’s name.
The former MUSIGA president said healing was a gradual process and credited God for helping her overcome the trauma.
‘I thank God for healing’
Diana said she has forgiven her former husband and no longer carries the same pain associated with the experience.
“I thank God for healing.”
Her revelation sheds light on the often-hidden experiences of people trapped in abusive relationships and highlights the importance of seeking safety when violence and threats escalate.
Diana’s story also reflects her personal journey from surviving a traumatic marriage to finding healing and using her experience to speak openly about difficult moments in her life.
