Ghana Airways could return to the skies in 2027 as the government advances plans to revive the country’s former national carrier, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

According to Ablakwa, President John Dramani Mahama has established a technical committee to oversee the proposed revival, and the committee has submitted its report. The President has also held discussions with executives of American aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of efforts to move the plan forward.

Ablakwa said the government was targeting 2027 for the airline’s return, although details of its fleet, operating partner and confirmed launch date have not yet been announced.

Speaking about the proposed revival, Ablakwa said the President had taken steps towards establishing a framework for the airline’s return.

“President Mahama has put together a technical committee. They have submitted their report. Last month, he had a good meeting with the management of Boeing,” he said.

The minister added that the President’s target was to have Ghana Airways operating again in 2027.

“And I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target is that next year, 2027, we will have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” Ablakwa stated.

The proposed revival would mark a significant development for Ghana’s aviation sector, which has operated without the original Ghana Airways since the company ceased operations in 2004.

However, the 2027 timeline remains a government target, with further details needed on how the airline will be established and begin commercial operations.

Direct Ghana-Canada flights among priorities

Ablakwa also identified a direct air connection between Ghana and Canada as one of the proposed airline’s priorities.

The route is expected to improve travel options for Ghanaians living in Canada and support movement between the two countries for business, tourism, education and family visits.

A direct connection could also strengthen links with Ghana’s diaspora communities by reducing the need for some passengers to travel through connecting hubs in other countries.

In March 2025, Ghana and Canada signed an air transport agreement allowing airlines from both countries to operate scheduled passenger and cargo services between the two countries.

The agreement provides a framework for air services, although the proposed Ghana Airways route will depend on the airline’s operational plans and the necessary arrangements.

Ghana Airways’ history and previous shutdown

Ghana Airways was once the country’s national carrier but ceased operations in July 2004 following years of financial difficulties and mounting debts.

Ghana International Airlines was later established as a replacement, but it also ceased operations in 2010.

The absence of a sustained national airline has remained an important issue in discussions about Ghana’s aviation industry and international connectivity.

The proposed revival of Ghana Airways would therefore require decisions on financing, aircraft acquisition, management, staffing and the airline’s business model.

What happens next?

Although discussions with Boeing have been disclosed, the government has not announced all the details required to establish the airline’s operational plans.

Questions remain about the aircraft that could be used, the airline’s ownership and operating structure, its initial destinations and the timing of ticket sales.

For now, the government’s stated objective is to return Ghana Airways to the skies in 2027, with direct flights to Canada identified as a priority.

Further announcements will be needed to clarify how the plan will be implemented and whether the proposed timeline can be achieved.
