The family of the late Apostle Prof. Emeritus Ing. Kwadwo Safo, Founder and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, has accused his daughter, Sarah Adwoa Safo, of demanding GH¢3.7 million before allowing the burial of the renowned inventor and religious leader to proceed.
In a statement issued by Dr Kissi Siaw, Secretary of the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family of Essumaja, the family alleged that the former Member of Parliament is effectively delaying the burial by insisting on the payment of GH¢3,700,000, which was described in correspondence as an “initial preparation” towards the funeral.
Family outlines sequence of events
According to the family’s statement, Adwoa Safo first wrote to the family’s lawyer on June 4, 2026, requesting a meeting to discuss funeral arrangements and resolve outstanding issues amicably.
In the letter, she reportedly indicated that customary law should guide the process and described it as “quiet and orderly.”
However, the family claimed that although a meeting was scheduled by their lawyer, Adwoa Safo did not attend. They further alleged that she later held a press conference announcing July 30 and July 31, 2026, as the burial and funeral dates without the family’s approval.
The statement further alleged that on July 21, 2026, Adwoa Safo’s lawyers sent another letter expressing a willingness to cooperate on the funeral arrangements. According to the family, the same correspondence also contained the demand for GH¢3.7 million.
The family said they responded to the letter but no further meeting took place.
Family cites will as basis for funeral authority
The family also referred to the reading of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s will, stating that the process was initiated at the request of Adwoa Safo.
According to the statement, the will vested custody of the late founder’s body and responsibility for the funeral arrangements in Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, son of the deceased.
Based on this, the family insists that the authority to organise the burial rests with Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena together with the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family of Essumaja.
Funeral arrangements placed on hold
The family stressed that no agreement had been reached with Adwoa Safo regarding funeral arrangements and described the alleged GH¢3.7 million demand as unacceptable.
They characterised the request as an attempt to hold the late Apostle’s remains “hostage” and announced that all funeral dates previously made public by Adwoa Safo had been suspended indefinitely.
According to the statement, new burial and funeral dates will be announced at the appropriate time after the family completes preparations for what they described as a befitting farewell that honours the legacy of the Kristo Asafo founder.
“The body of Apostle Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo shall be laid to rest with the dignity he earned in life, not held for ransom by anyone,” the family stated.
The family also urged members of the public and followers of the Kristo Asafo Mission to disregard any funeral announcements made by Adwoa Safo and maintained that they remain the lawful custodians of the burial arrangements.
As of the time of publication, Sarah Adwoa Safo has not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the family’s statement.
