The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was discovered on a beach in Cape Coast days after she was reported missing.
According to a statement issued by the Police on Tuesday, June 16, the suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team after sustained intelligence-led operations.

Police disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Michael Mensah allegedly picked up the deceased from the Ayensu Plaza area within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m.
The suspect, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, allegedly took Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her body was later discovered washed ashore.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has shaken the University of Cape Coast community and sparked widespread concern among Ghanaians, particularly students and parents.
Innocentia, a Level 200 student, was reported missing after she allegedly left campus to meet a friend. Her body was later found near Hutchland Beach Resort in Cape Coast, leading to calls for a swift investigation and justice for the young student.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are still ongoing and that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
The tragic incident has reignited conversations about student safety, security around university communities, and the need for increased awareness when meeting unfamiliar persons.
As investigations continue, many Ghanaians have taken to social media to mourn Innocentia’s death and demand that justice be served for the young student whose life was cut short under heartbreaking circumstances.
