Ghanaian musician Joey B has finally opened up about the health struggles that led to his prolonged absence from the music industry, revealing that an undiagnosed asthma condition affected his strength, breathing, and ability to continue working at his usual pace.
Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV on Wednesday, June 10, the artiste disclosed that he battled recurring illnesses for years without knowing the exact cause of his condition.

According to Joey B, he initially believed his symptoms were related to common illnesses such as malaria, sinusitis, or general exhaustion because he frequently experienced weakness and difficulty breathing.
“I got sick. I didn’t know I had asthma. Before then, I used to think it was malaria or sinusitis because I would feel weak and get tired easily. Sometimes I couldn’t even breathe properly,” he said.
The “Tonga” hitmaker revealed that it was around 2019 or 2020 that a doctor identified asthma as the source of his recurring health problems. He explained that the diagnosis came as a surprise to him, even though there was a history of the condition within his family.
“A doctor asked me if I knew about asthma. My dad also had asthma, although he says he’s healed now, so that’s when I found out what was really happening,” Joey B stated.
Following the diagnosis, the musician said he had to prioritise his health and step away from the demands of the music scene to recover properly.
He further explained that his lifestyle at the time contributed to the severity of his condition, especially because he spent long periods inside recording studios.
According to him, the studio environment became a major trigger for his asthma attacks.
“What was triggering it was the studio environment. I practically lived in the studio and slept there. The more I stayed there, the worse it got, so I had to take proper care of myself,” he revealed.

Despite the difficult period, Joey B stressed that walking away from music was never something he considered.
“Did I ever think about stopping music? Oh, hell no. I just needed my strength back,” he said.
His revelation gives fans a deeper understanding of the challenges he faced away from the spotlight and highlights the determination that kept him connected to his passion for music despite his health battle.
As Joey B continues his journey back into the music space, fans will be hoping to see the award-winning artiste return stronger, healthier, and ready to deliver more hit songs.
