Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked massive reactions on social media after playfully declaring himself Ghanaian ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The award-winning singer made the statement on Tuesday, June 2, after reposting a video of John Dramani Mahama speaking about Ghana’s plans for fan support during the tournament.

In the video, President Mahama explained that the government would not sponsor supporters to travel to the World Cup because of the huge financial cost involved. According to him, transporting, accommodating, feeding and purchasing tickets for fans would place a heavy burden on the country’s finances, especially with the tournament taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Instead, the President revealed that Ghana would rely heavily on Ghanaians living abroad to support the Black Stars during the competition.

Reacting to the video, Davido shared it on his Instagram Story with the caption, “I am Ghanaian for the World Cup.”

The lighthearted comment immediately generated excitement online, with many football fans praising the singer for showing support for Ghana ahead of the global tournament. Others also viewed the post as a sign of the close relationship and cultural connection between Ghana and Nigeria.

The Black Stars recently announced their final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as preparations intensify ahead of the tournament. Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Davido’s comment has added to the growing excitement surrounding Ghana’s participation in the tournament, with fans hopeful the Black Stars can make a strong impact on football’s biggest stage.

Beyond music, Davido has often shown interest in football and African unity, frequently interacting with football stars and supporting African teams during major international competitions. His latest comment once again highlights the strong bond between entertainment and sports across the continent.

As anticipation continues to build ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Davido’s playful declaration has become one of the latest trending moments connecting music, football and African pride.
