Gyakie Says She Never Planned a Music Career

Ghanaian singer Gyakie has opened up about her unexpected journey into the music industry, revealing that she never originally planned to pursue music as a career.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM on May 4, 2026, the “Forever” hitmaker shared that her earliest experiences with music were shaped at home, largely through the influence of her mother.

According to Gyakie, her mother would often encourage — and sometimes insist — that she perform in front of visitors, even when she felt reluctant.

“I never imagined I would pursue music as a profession while growing up. My mum used to make me perform at home, even when I didn’t want to,” she said.

She recalled how she would improvise during those moments, using everyday items like bottles or lotion containers as microphones while entertaining guests. Though she initially found it uncomfortable, she now believes those experiences played a crucial role in building her confidence.

Beyond her mother’s influence, Gyakie also credited her father, legendary highlife musician Nana Acheampong, for shaping her deep connection to music.

Growing up in a musically rich environment, she was constantly exposed to rehearsals, studio sessions, and interactions with other artistes. This early immersion gradually nurtured her love for the craft.

“Growing up around music made all of us love it. I watched my dad rehearse at home and in the studio, and I saw artistes coming in and out,” she explained.

Despite this strong musical background, Gyakie admitted that she did not initially see music as a viable career path. Instead, it remained more of a passion that she explored casually, especially during her school years.

She revealed that she served as an entertainment prefect in secondary school, a role that kept her actively involved in creative and performance-related activities. Even then, however, she did not fully recognise her potential.

The turning point in her journey came after she released her first song. The positive feedback she received from listeners became a defining moment that changed her perspective.

“The feedback I received made me sit up. People kept saying my voice was unique and the song was good. It felt like they were pointing me towards something important,” she said.

That encouragement pushed her to take music more seriously, eventually transforming what started as a reluctant hobby into a full-fledged career.

Today, Gyakie is one of Ghana’s most successful young artistes, with a growing international presence and a catalogue of hit songs that continue to resonate with fans across the globe.

Her story highlights how talent can sometimes emerge unexpectedly and evolve into a thriving career when nurtured in the right environment.

It also underscores the importance of early support systems, as her journey might have taken a completely different path without the influence of her family.

From singing reluctantly in her living room to performing on global stages, Gyakie’s rise serves as a reminder that purpose is not always planned — sometimes, it is discovered along the way.
