Ghanaian rapper Pappy Kojo has reignited debate within the country’s music industry after boldly claiming that the best rappers in Ghana come from the West Side, particularly Takoradi, and not Accra.

Speaking in an interview with Headless YouTuber, the “Realer No” hitmaker explained why he has consistently championed talents from the western part of the country.

When asked about his efforts to spotlight West Side artistes and whether more projects are in the pipeline, Pappy Kojo doubled down on his confidence in the region’s rap dominance.

“Bro, I feel like the best rappers are in West Side,” he said. “I dare the best rapper in Accra—take them there, they’ll be lashed.”

Known for proudly representing Takoradi throughout his career, the rapper described his experiences watching local talents perform as impressive and inspiring.

According to him, rappers from the West Side possess a rare blend of originality, sharp wordplay, and lyrical depth that sets them apart from many of their peers.

“They’re really, really lyrical. They don’t do none of that melodic, mumbled stuff—nah. It’s bars to bars, like I’m tearing your head off,” he stated.

Pappy Kojo suggested that many of the rappers from Takoradi remain rooted in traditional rap values, focusing on pure lyricism rather than chasing modern trends or commercial sounds.

He also shared a nostalgic moment from a recent visit to the region, revealing that he heard the term “hootey”—a phrase commonly used in earlier times—which reminded him of the area’s cultural authenticity and strong connection to its roots.

His comments have since sparked lively reactions online, with fans debating whether Ghana’s strongest rap talent truly lies in the West Side or in the capital city, Accra.

Many supporters of Takoradi’s music scene welcomed the statement, while others defended Accra’s long-standing influence on Ghanaian hip-hop and urban music.

Over the years, Pappy Kojo has remained one of the loudest voices promoting Takoradi’s creative culture, helping to place the city firmly on Ghana’s entertainment map.

With his latest remarks, the conversation about regional dominance in Ghanaian rap has once again taken centre stage.
