The wife of Ghanaian businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye has formally filed a complaint with the Ghana Police Service, alleging years of physical abuse as their ongoing divorce proceedings continue to unfold.
In a letter dated April 14, 2026, lawyers representing Joana Quaye detailed claims of persistent domestic violence, which they say occurred over an eleven-year period. According to the legal team, the situation escalated to the point where their client was compelled to lodge a formal complaint with the police on December 9, 2025.

The allegations outlined in the letter include repeated instances of physical assault, with claims that Mr. Quaye subjected his wife to acts such as slapping, punching, kicking, and whipping with a belt. These incidents were reportedly linked to disputes, including those involving alleged infidelity.
Beyond the claims of physical violence, the lawyers also raised concerns about what they describe as coercive behaviour. They allege that on certain occasions, Mr. Quaye attempted to force his wife into sexual acts after returning from trips, and that refusal often led to further assault and the withdrawal of financial support for the household.
The complaint also highlights concerns about delays in previous police action. Joana Quaye’s legal representatives referenced an earlier report involving an alleged incident at Dansoman in Accra, where Mr. Quaye is said to have attempted to forcibly break into his wife’s bedroom. According to the lawyers, that case has remained unresolved for approximately three years.
The matter has now been referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, which has begun investigations into the allegations. The unit is expected to examine the claims and determine the appropriate legal steps moving forward.
In their correspondence addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Joana Quaye’s lawyers urged authorities to treat the case with urgency. They expressed concern over what they described as a “seeming apathy” in handling complaints related to violence against their client.

They further called on the police to provide updates on the progress of investigations and to outline measures being taken to ensure accountability and justice. According to the legal team, the case raises broader issues regarding public confidence in how domestic violence cases are handled in Ghana.
The allegations have drawn public attention due to Mr. Quaye’s prominence within Ghana’s business community, with many observers calling for due process and a thorough investigation. At the same time, advocacy groups continue to emphasise the importance of addressing domestic violence and ensuring that victims receive adequate protection and support.
As investigations proceed, the case is expected to remain under close scrutiny, with its outcome potentially contributing to ongoing discussions about justice, accountability, and the protection of victims of abuse in Ghana.
