Mahama Says Tough Reforms Have Laid Foundation for Ghana’s Future

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that although the outcomes of his government’s decisions over the past year may not yet be fully visible, they have laid a solid foundation for Ghana’s long-term development and sustainable growth.

Speaking on Wednesday at the National Thanksgiving Day service held at the forecourt of the Presidency, the President reflected on his first year in office as the sixth President of the Fourth Republic, acknowledging that his administration has had to make difficult but necessary choices.

“As we look back on the past year, we do so honestly. We have taken difficult decisions, we have undertaken difficult reforms, and we have laid the foundations that may not yet be visible, but are for the sustainable progress of our country,” President Mahama said.

According to him, his government deliberately prioritised economic stabilisation in response to the challenges facing the country at the time he assumed office. He explained that while such reforms often require sacrifice and patience, they are essential to securing Ghana’s future prosperity.

President Mahama further noted that his administration has made significant strides in restoring confidence, both domestically and internationally. He said trust in Ghana’s governance and economic direction had been shaken in previous years, but consistent policy actions and institutional reforms are helping to rebuild credibility.

“We have prioritised economic stabilisation, institutional reforms, social protection and the restoration of confidence both within our country and in the international community,” he stated.

The President stressed that national progress should not be judged solely by economic data or technical indicators. Instead, he urged Ghanaians to also consider less tangible but equally important measures such as renewed public trust, hope, and a clear sense of national direction.

“The work we have begun is far from finished, but today reminds us that progress is not measured only by numbers, by charts and diagrams; it is also measured by hope that is restored, by trust that is rebuilt and correct directions that are regained,” he added.

The National Thanksgiving Service was organised to mark one year since President Mahama was sworn into office on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The event brought together government officials, religious leaders, traditional authorities and members of the public to reflect on the past year and offer prayers for the nation’s future.

As Ghana continues its recovery journey, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the reform agenda and ensuring that the foundations laid translate into inclusive growth, social stability and improved living standards for all citizens.

He called on Ghanaians to remain patient and united, assuring them that the difficult decisions taken today are meant to secure a stronger, more resilient Ghana for generations to come.
