Nutrifoods Ghana Recalls Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Nationwide Over Safety Concerns

Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, the well-known manufacturer behind the Tasty Tom brand, has announced a nationwide recall of its Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, packaged in 210g and 400g cans. The decision follows a directive issued by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana in response to confirmed cases of product bloating.

The recall was ordered after the FDA, in collaboration with National Security, received alerts regarding the integrity and safety of certain batches of the tomato mix currently on the market. Investigations revealed bloating in the cans — a key indicator of potential microbial contamination and compromised product quality.

In a public statement, Nutrifoods Ghana assured consumers that it is fully cooperating with authorities and is committed to protecting public health and safety. The company emphasized that it has activated its internal quality control protocols and is working closely with the FDA to trace and remove affected products from all retail outlets across the country.

“Consumer safety remains our number one priority. We are taking swift action to ensure no affected product remains on shelves,” the statement said.

Nutrifoods Ghana Limited is a subsidiary of the multinational TGI Group, operating in Ghana since 2004. The company has become a household name, producing popular brands including Perk biscuits, Royal King Cracker, Milky Magic, and Royal Digestive—all of which are widely distributed in Ghana and across West Africa.

The company operates a modern manufacturing facility in Tema, which is equipped with advanced processing and packaging equipment. Nutrifoods says it maintains robust quality assurance systems to ensure all products meet both local and international food safety standards.

This recall applies only to the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 210g and 400g canned variants. Other Nutrifoods products are not affected and remain safe for consumption.

The FDA has urged the public to check product packaging carefully and report any signs of bloating or other abnormalities. Consumers who have purchased the affected product are advised not to consume it and to return it to the point of purchase or the nearest Nutrifoods distribution center.

As the situation develops, Nutrifoods has pledged to keep the public updated with new findings and additional safety measures. The company has also reiterated its commitment to transparency and its goal of rebuilding public trust through accountability and swift corrective action.

This incident marks a critical moment in Ghana’s food safety landscape and highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in ensuring the integrity of consumer goods.
