Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Recuperating Abroad

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is in good health and is currently taking a short period of rest in the United Kingdom, following medical advice.

This was confirmed by government officials who moved to quell widespread speculation and misinformation surrounding her health.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, clarified her condition in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. He assured the public that the Vice President is recovering steadily and will soon resume her official duties.

“She is currently in good health and taking a short rest as advised by her doctors. She should be back to her duties shortly,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated. “She is in the United Kingdom as I speak,” he added, underscoring the temporary and precautionary nature of her medical leave.

His remarks align with earlier comments by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who addressed the issue while engaging the Ghanaian community in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 6. Mr. Ablakwa dismissed the swirling rumours and unverified social media narratives, calling them “vicious and unGhanaian evil propaganda.”

“Our mother, the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, is doing very, very well,” he affirmed. “Your prayers have worked. I’ve personally heard from her, and I know she is doing well.”

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on Friday, March 28, shortly after fulfilling official responsibilities. She was initially treated at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) before being flown abroad for further care and rest. Her temporary absence sparked various unconfirmed reports online, prompting swift clarification from top government officials.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the symbolic and inspirational importance of Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership, particularly for Ghanaian women and girls.

“Very soon, she will return to continue serving Ghana and inspiring our daughters to know that women can do what men can do—and even better,” he said.

The government has urged Ghanaians to remain calm and disregard misinformation. Officials continue to advocate for unity and trust in verified communication channels as the Vice President nears her return.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s recovery marks a reassuring moment for the nation, as she remains a central figure in Ghana’s political leadership and a role model for gender equality in governance.
