Otto Addo Predicts Fierce Battle as Ghana Face Nigeria in Unity Cup Opener

Ghana national team head coach Otto Addo has urged fans to prepare for a fiercely contested fixture as the Black Stars gear up to face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the opening match of the 2025 Unity Cup.

The high-stakes clash is scheduled for Thursday evening in London, England, and marks the first fixture of the four-nation tournament.

Although billed as a friendly, the historic rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria adds layers of intensity to what promises to be a thrilling contest. Otto Addo, who returned as head coach in 2024, acknowledged the emotional weight of the encounter and the competitive nature of matches between the two West African giants.

“As always, it’s a tough battle, and people can expect that. There are always fights between the two countries,” Addo said. “Even though it’s a friendly, it’s not really a friendly. We are looking forward to it, and we are happy to be here to play against Nigeria.”

This will be the second meeting between Ghana and Nigeria in the last two years. The Super Eagles edged out the Black Stars 2-1 in March 2024 during Addo’s return to the technical bench. That defeat remains fresh in the minds of the players and fans, further fueling anticipation for Thursday’s rematch.

Both teams are heading into the Unity Cup aiming to fine-tune preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but pride and bragging rights are on the line whenever these two nations meet. Ghana’s squad will look to make a statement, especially in the absence of key figures like Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus, who were left out of the current squad.

Despite the challenges, Addo remains optimistic about his team’s chances. With a blend of experienced campaigners and promising debutants such as Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona, Ghana hopes to seize the moment and advance to the final.

The winner of the Ghana vs Nigeria fixture will face Jamaica, who secured their place in the final after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. The Unity Cup final is slated for Saturday, May 31, also in London.

“We will do our best,” Addo said, reinforcing the team’s determination to put up a strong performance.

As anticipation builds, the Unity Cup opener is set to reignite one of Africa’s greatest football rivalries. With passion, pride, and a spot in the final on the line, fans across the continent can expect a memorable night of football under the lights of London.
