Ghana’s Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has identified England as the likely favourites to top Group L in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Friday’s official draw in Washington, D.C. The ceremony, held at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, placed Ghana in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Three Lions remain one of the tournament’s strongest contenders, having reached the final in 2018, while Croatia continue to be a formidable force, following their impressive run to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022. Panama, meanwhile, will be making only their second World Cup appearance, but cannot be underestimated.

Speaking to Ghanafa.org after the draw, Otto Addo emphasized respect for every team in the group while acknowledging England’s strength.
“I look forward to every game as special,” he said.
“It’s very important for us that we don’t underrate any team.
For sure, England is the favourite in that group, but for me as a coach, I’m looking at each and every game equally.”
His comments highlight the Black Stars’ commitment to avoid complacency as they prepare for what promises to be one of the most competitive groups of the tournament.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, a crucial opening match that could set the tone for the rest of the tournament. They will then take on England on June 23 in what is expected to be a high-profile clash. The Black Stars wrap up their group stage journey against Croatia on June 27, a team known for their discipline, experience, and tournament resilience.
The Black Stars aim to break a difficult streak, having failed to progress past the group stage in their last two World Cup appearances. With Otto Addo back at the helm and a fresh wave of young talent emerging, Ghana will be hopeful of making a strong statement on the global stage.

Group L presents a blend of football heritage, experience, and hunger. While England and Croatia bring tournament pedigree, Ghana and Panama both arrive with something to prove. Addo’s balanced approach and insistence on treating every game equally suggests a team ready to battle, regardless of reputation or past results.
As anticipation builds ahead of the 2026 World Cup kickoff, one thing is clear: the Black Stars are preparing for a fight, not fear.
