Jordan Ayew Backs Black Stars Squad Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Captain of the Ghana national football team, Jordan Ayew, has expressed confidence in the current squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that the team that secured qualification has what it takes to compete strongly at the global tournament.

The competition will be hosted across United States, Mexico and Canada, marking the first time the World Cup will be jointly staged by three countries.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will face tough competition from England national football team, Panama national football team and Croatia national football team.

Despite the strength of the group, Ayew believes the Black Stars have built a solid squad capable of representing the country well on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Adom Sports, the Ghana captain praised the players who participated in the qualifying campaign.

According to him, their impressive performances during the qualifiers demonstrate that the team has the quality needed to compete at the tournament.

“I think the players who played during the qualifiers have done extremely well. I don’t think we need any additions. I believe we have a good team and, as time goes on, we are improving,” he said.

Ghana secured qualification after a strong run in their final matches, recording five wins and one draw in their last six games, a performance that boosted confidence within the squad.

Ayew noted that although the team has not spent much time training together, the chemistry among players is steadily improving.

“We haven’t had much time to train together, but the unity is getting better and everything is improving,” he added.

The forward also suggested that making significant changes to the team at this stage might not be necessary.

However, he acknowledged that decisions regarding player selection ultimately rest with the coaching staff.

“I don’t think this is the right time to make changes. But to be honest, on the technical side, the coach will know whom to add or select,” Ayew explained.

He emphasised that any player who is brought into the squad must be ready to contribute fully and compete at the highest level.

“Whoever is added must be ready to give their all and put on a show,” he said.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign with a match against Panama in the Canadian city of Toronto.

The Black Stars will then face England before concluding the group stage against Croatia in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.

Football analysts believe the group presents both challenges and opportunities for Ghana, with the team aiming to progress beyond the group stage and improve on previous World Cup performances.

For Ayew, maintaining team unity and building on the momentum from the qualifiers will be key factors in Ghana’s chances at the tournament.

As preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue, the Black Stars captain remains optimistic that the current group of players can rise to the occasion and make the country proud on the global stage.
