Ghana-Nigeria Boxing Tragedy: Kofi Adams Calls for Calm After Oluwasegun’s Passing

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has assured that proactive measures will be taken to maintain strong Ghana-Nigeria boxing relations following the tragic passing of Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju.

Speaking on Sporty FM on April 1, 2025, Minister Adams dismissed concerns of strained ties between the two nations’ boxing communities. He emphasized the importance of unity, mutual respect, and collaboration in sports, urging both countries to remain focused on athlete welfare.

The tragic incident occurred after an eight-round international light-heavyweight bout between Olanrewaju and Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu. Olanrewaju was rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he later passed away.

Following his death, the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), led by its President Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, formally requested an autopsy report from the Ghana Boxing Authority on March 31, 2025. This move reflects Nigeria’s concerns about fighter safety and medical protocols during the bout.

Minister Adams addressed fears that the Nigerian boxing community might hold resentment over the tragic loss. He firmly stated that Ghana remains committed to strengthening its sports diplomacy and ensuring Nigerian boxers feel safe and welcome at future events in the country.

“We recognize the deep history and rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria in boxing, but at its core, this is about respect and athlete safety,” Adams remarked. He assured that ongoing discussions between the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and the NBBC will ensure transparency and reinforce trust.

The tragic incident has reignited conversations about fighter safety, medical readiness, and regulations in professional boxing. Both Ghana and Nigeria have a rich history of producing world-class boxers, and authorities are now being urged to implement stricter safety measures.

While Olanrewaju’s passing is a devastating loss for the boxing world, Ghana’s leadership is taking steps to prevent any diplomatic fallout. The focus now is on unity, sportsmanship, and ensuring that boxing remains a bridge of friendship between Ghana and Nigeria.
