Thomas Partey Pleads Not Guilty to Rape and Sexual Assault Charges

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has denied multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault after appearing at Southwark Crown Court in London.

The Ghanaian international pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault, relating to alleged incidents between 2021 and 2022 during his time in the Premier League. The 32-year-old was formally charged just four days after leaving Arsenal, following the expiration of his contract in June.

Partey, who currently plays for Spanish side Villarreal, was granted bail until his trial, scheduled to begin on 2 November 2026 at the same court. As part of the hearing, he confirmed his identity before entering his pleas to each of the charges.

The bail conditions allow him to continue playing professional football but require him to inform police of any international travel at least 24 hours in advance. He is also barred from contacting the complainants directly or indirectly.

Partey was already in England earlier in the week as Villarreal faced Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League. He came on as a substitute in the match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Villarreal.

The case has drawn widespread public attention, given Partey’s high-profile career spanning Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, and the Ghana national team. His legal team has not issued further public comment beyond his court pleas.

Observers note that this trial will likely attract significant media coverage, not only because of Partey’s footballing stature but also due to the broader conversation around sexual misconduct allegations in sports.

Supporters of the player have expressed hope that he will be vindicated, while others argue that the case underscores the need for accountability, regardless of status.

The trial is expected to last several weeks, with testimonies from the complainants, witnesses, and expert evidence. If convicted, Partey could face a significant custodial sentence under UK law.

For now, the midfielder remains free on bail, continuing his career in Spain while awaiting his trial in London next year.
