Nigerian DJ Association Bans Burna Boy Songs After Alleged Clash

The Nigerian DJ Association has announced a temporary ban on songs by Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, directing disc jockeys both in Nigeria and across the diaspora to remove his music from their playlists.

The decision follows reports of an alleged altercation between Burna Boy and popular DJ DJ Tunez, whose real name is Michael Babatunde Adeyinka, during a private event in Lagos.

According to multiple reports, the incident occurred inside a nightclub, where a disagreement between the parties reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. Sources cited by local media claim that several individuals were involved, with DJ Tunez allegedly assaulted during the clash.

In response, the Nigerian DJ Association issued a statement on Instagram on Tuesday, expressing solidarity with DJ Tunez and calling on its members to take collective action.

“Showing their support for Tunez, the Nigerian DJ Association has issued a press statement to all disc jockeys to avoid playing the singer’s song,” the statement said.

The association further announced that Burna Boy’s music would remain off DJs’ playlists until a full investigation into the incident is completed.

“Burna Boy’s music is temporarily out of any of our DJs’ playlists till further notice. Our team will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred last night involving one of our own, DJ Tunez,” it added.

Emphasising unity and professionalism within the entertainment space, the group stressed that all DJs must be treated with fairness and respect.

“Here at NigerianDJ, we put all our DJs first, standing firm on ‘ALL DJs are EQUAL,’ and offering a transparent, personal service to help our DJs and clients achieve their goals and ambitions,” the statement continued.

The association also urged its members to uphold principles of equality and reject any form of discrimination, noting that a supportive environment is essential for the growth of the industry.

“Please ensure freedom and equality for all DJs nationwide so they can flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are being held back,” it said.

As of the time of reporting, Burna Boy and his management team have not issued any official response regarding the alleged incident or the directive from the DJs’ association.

The development has sparked conversations across the African music scene, highlighting ongoing concerns about professionalism, accountability, and relationships between artistes and DJs—key stakeholders in the promotion and success of music across the continent.
