Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has stirred debate by suggesting that celebrated actress and television host Nana Ama McBrown should be included in the list of public figures granted diplomatic passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a viral video that has since sparked conversations on social media, Nana Aba explained that McBrown’s influence extends far beyond Ghana’s borders, making her an ideal candidate for such recognition.

She argued that the Onua Showtime host’s work resonates strongly with Ghanaians in the diaspora, where she is widely admired for her charisma, authenticity, and dedication to preserving Ghanaian culture.
“My pick would have been Nana Ama McBrown easily because Nana Ama wields a certain power in the diaspora. For Ghanaians abroad, she is loved across the world in the Ghanaian communities, and you cannot underestimate her impact. So I think there should have been a representation from that sector, the local language speakers. So it does not look like only those who speak English,” Nana Aba said.
She further emphasized that McBrown, who frequently uses local languages in her television work, plays an important role in promoting Ghana’s culture and identity. By blending entertainment with cultural preservation, McBrown appeals not only to urban audiences but also to grassroots communities and Ghanaians abroad who feel more connected through language and tradition.
Nana Aba also suggested that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consider other cultural icons such as musician Wiyaala, who has gained international acclaim for her unique artistry rooted in African traditions. According to her, broadening the list of beneficiaries to include local language speakers and cultural representatives will prevent the initiative from being perceived as elitist or limited to English-speaking celebrities.
The government’s recent decision to issue diplomatic passports to selected celebrities has largely been applauded, with many noting that public figures play a crucial role in promoting Ghana’s image internationally. Diplomatic passports allow holders to travel with certain privileges, enabling them to represent the country more effectively on global stages. However, the criteria for selection have also raised questions, with some Ghanaians calling for a more inclusive process.
On social media, Nana Aba’s comments generated mixed reactions. Supporters agreed that McBrown deserves the recognition, pointing to her longstanding contribution to film, television, and philanthropy. Others argued that the government must tread cautiously to avoid politicising the initiative or limiting it to a select few entertainers.

For decades, Nana Ama McBrown has been regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential actresses, with roles in both Kumawood and mainstream productions. Beyond acting, her success as a television presenter, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has cemented her place as a household name. Many believe that granting her a diplomatic passport would not only honor her legacy but also strengthen Ghana’s cultural diplomacy abroad.
As conversations continue, it remains to be seen whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will expand its list to include more personalities who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s global reputation. For now, Nana Aba’s call has reignited national discussion on how best to recognize and empower cultural icons who embody Ghana’s identity on the world stage.
