Mahama Declares “Ghana Is Back” in 2026 State of the Nation Address

President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Ghana’s economy is stabilising and returning to growth, telling Parliament that “Ghana is back” and “Ghana is working again.”

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in the Parliament of Ghana on Friday, 27 February, the President acknowledged that the road to recovery had not been easy but insisted that his government’s economic policies are beginning to produce measurable results.

“I was clear from the outset that recovery would not come easily, but I was also clear that I would stop at nothing to turn this situation around and bring relief to Ghanaians,” he told Members of Parliament.

Reflecting on his earlier commitments, President Mahama reminded the House that he had pledged to reset the economy despite the severe challenges facing the country at the time.

“I promised then that just as I have confronted and overcome crises in the past, I would reset our economy and return us to a path of growth, progress and development,” he said.

He stressed that difficult but necessary decisions were required to restore economic stability and rebuild confidence.

“Mr Speaker, I told this August House when I appeared before you last year that we would have to take tough, prudent and necessary decisions to restore stability and credibility. Today, I can say with confidence: Ghana is back. Ghana is working again. And Ghana is open for business.”

According to the President, key economic indicators are now showing positive trends, signalling a turnaround in the country’s fortunes. He noted that the administration deliberately chose fiscal discipline and structural reform over short-term fixes.

“From the outset, we resolved to choose discipline over waste, reform over excuses, and stability over speculation,” he stated.

President Mahama explained that the government’s immediate priority upon assuming office was to restore order to public finances and halt further economic deterioration.

“As a responsible government, our first order of business was to halt the economic haemorrhage and restore order to our public finances,” he said.

He disclosed that his administration tightened spending controls, enhanced transparency in reporting government payables, and conducted a comprehensive audit of financial commitments made in 2024. These measures, he said, are already delivering significant outcomes.

“These measures have begun to deliver some of the most remarkable economic outcomes in decades,” he told the House.

Looking ahead, the President expressed optimism about Ghana’s future as the nation prepares to celebrate its 69th Independence Anniversary. He encouraged citizens to approach the milestone with renewed hope and confidence.

“We approach this celebration not only with pride in our past but also with renewed hope for our future. We are building prosperity through sound policy, responsible governance, and inclusive growth,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to reform, he concluded: “Our Resetting Ghana agenda is working. Our nation is on the runway; it is in takeoff mode. And you are all advised to fasten your seat belts.”

The address underscores the government’s continued focus on fiscal discipline, structural reform, and rebuilding confidence in Ghana’s financial and institutional systems as it seeks to sustain economic recovery and long-term growth.
