The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a seven-member jury found him guilty of murder by a 5–2 majority verdict.
Inspector Twumasi was convicted for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, widely known as Maa Adwoa, near her residence at Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023. The gruesome incident triggered nationwide outrage and renewed discussions about gun violence and professional misconduct among Ghana’s security services.

Although the police officer initially confessed to the shooting, he later claimed it was not intentional, pleading not guilty when the case went to trial.
After nearly three years of legal proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025, bringing closure to one of the most widely followed criminal cases in recent memory.
Family members of the late Maa Adwoa, who were present in court, expressed relief and gratitude following the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their continuous coverage of the case and described the ruling as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.
The victim, 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah (Maa Adwoa), was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, at Adum — just a few meters from her residence.
During his first court appearance, Twumasi admitted to the shooting but insisted he did not intend to kill his lover.

According to the prosecution’s findings, the tragic incident stemmed from a dispute over GH¢5,000. The police officer had reportedly demanded a refund from the deceased, and when she failed to repay the amount, he allegedly opened fire, leading to her death.
The verdict, according to many observers, serves as a strong message against abuse of power and underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice, even when the accused is a member of the security services.
