The Kotoka International Airport will officially be renamed Accra International Airport, marking the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most recognizable national landmarks.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Transport in a statement issued on Monday, February 23, as part of a broader national effort to modernise and rebrand key infrastructure across the country.

For decades, Kotoka International Airport has served as Ghana’s primary gateway to the world. Located in the capital city, Accra, the airport has played a central role in connecting Ghana to major global destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, and the Middle East. With the commissioning of Terminal 3 and other significant upgrades in recent years, the facility has grown into one of the most modern and efficient airports in West Africa.
According to officials, the decision to rename the airport to Accra International Airport is intended to strengthen its global identity and align it more directly with the capital city it serves. Authorities believe that associating the airport’s name with Accra will enhance international recognition, simplify branding, and reinforce the city’s status as a leading hub for travel, commerce, and tourism in the region.
The renaming forms part of a strategic vision to position Ghana as a key centre for international trade and aviation in West Africa. As air travel continues to expand across the continent, governments are increasingly focused on strengthening infrastructure and improving global visibility. Officials say the new name reflects Ghana’s ambition to remain competitive and forward-looking in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
Despite the change, the government has assured the public that operations at the airport will continue seamlessly. Passengers, airlines, and other stakeholders are not expected to experience any disruptions during the transition period. Signage, official documentation, and branding materials will be updated gradually to reflect the new name, while maintaining the same high standards of safety, security, and customer service.

The airport’s transformation over the years has mirrored Ghana’s broader economic and infrastructural growth. From handling increased passenger traffic to expanding cargo capacity, the facility has become a vital link supporting tourism, investment, and international partnerships. The rebranding is therefore seen not just as a symbolic gesture, but as part of a comprehensive approach to strengthening Ghana’s global presence.
While the name Kotoka International Airport holds historical significance, authorities have emphasised that the change represents a forward-looking strategy rather than a dismissal of history. The focus, they note, is on building a modern national identity that reflects Ghana’s aspirations and its role on the international stage.
As Accra International Airport takes on its new identity, it is expected to continue serving as a critical gateway to Ghana and West Africa. The move underscores the government’s commitment to modernization, economic growth, and reinforcing Accra’s position as a dynamic and globally connected capital city.
