A tragic incident occurred in Tema Community One on Monday, March 16, after a helicopter crashed into a park near a school, leaving two people dead.
The crash happened at the Oninku Drive School Park, where witnesses say the helicopter suddenly fell from the sky before crashing into the area, triggering panic among residents and people nearby.
According to reports from the scene, the aircraft burst into flames after impact, creating a frightening scene in the usually quiet neighbourhood. The crash immediately drew the attention of residents who rushed to the area as emergency services were alerted.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service quickly responded to the emergency, arriving at the scene to control and extinguish the flames that engulfed parts of the wreckage. Firefighters worked swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading and to secure the area.
Officers from the Ghana Police Service also arrived at the scene to assist with rescue operations and to help manage the crowd that had gathered following the incident.
Emergency responders later confirmed that two individuals who were on board the helicopter lost their lives in the crash. Their bodies were reportedly badly burnt due to the intensity of the fire that followed the impact.
The charred remains of the victims were carefully retrieved from the wreckage by the emergency teams after the fire had been brought under control.
Speaking after the incident, the Assemblyman for the Kwesi Plange Electoral Area, Mr Ahmed Abdullia, confirmed the tragic loss of life but indicated that no students were harmed during the crash.
According to him, the helicopter crashed within the park area of the school compound, but fortunately, none of the students present in the area at the time sustained injuries.
Residents of Tema Community One who witnessed the crash described the moment as terrifying, with some saying they heard a loud noise before seeing smoke rising from the crash site.
Authorities have since cordoned off the area as investigations begin to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Officials are expected to examine the wreckage and gather further information about the aircraft, its flight path and the circumstances that may have led to the tragic incident.
The identities of the two victims have not yet been publicly disclosed as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured residents that all necessary steps will be taken to uncover the cause of the crash and prevent similar incidents in the future.
