The Government of Ghana has officially announced plans to hold a state funeral in honour of the late former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, on Friday, November 28, 2025.
The ceremony will be held at the Independence Square in Accra under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama. The announcement, made through a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, described the late First Lady as a towering figure in the promotion of women’s rights, children’s welfare, and national development.

According to the statement, the decision to honour her with a state funeral is a reflection of the government’s recognition of her lifelong dedication to public service, and her pioneering role in advancing gender equality in Ghana.
Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the beloved wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a leading advocate for social empowerment and women’s participation in governance. She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, a transformative organisation that empowered thousands of women across Ghana through education, vocational training, and economic initiatives.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Rawlings was celebrated both locally and internationally for her boldness, leadership, and passion for justice. She championed causes that improved the living standards of women and children, pushing for reforms in health, education, and women’s representation in politics.
President Mahama’s administration described her as a trailblazer whose legacy continues to shape Ghana’s social and political landscape.
