The final funeral rites for Ghanaian highlife legend Charles Kojo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba, have been scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The announcement comes months after the celebrated musician’s passing on July 26, 2025, following a short illness. Daddy Lumba’s death sent shockwaves across Ghana and beyond, with fans, industry colleagues, and political figures mourning the loss of a man whose music shaped generations.
A one-week observation ceremony was held on August 30 at Independence Square in Accra, drawing thousands of mourners from across the country. The event saw performances and tributes from fellow musicians, as well as attendance from top government officials and entertainment industry stakeholders who gathered to celebrate his lasting impact on Ghanaian music.
The upcoming funeral at the Baba Yara Stadium is expected to witness massive public participation, as fans, friends, and well-wishers converge in Kumasi to pay their final respects to the highlife legend.
Organizers have announced that the ceremony will feature live musical tributes, cultural displays, and performances of Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits — a fitting farewell to one of Ghana’s most influential musicians.
“This funeral will not only honour his memory but also celebrate the incredible legacy he left behind for Ghanaian and African music,” a member of the funeral planning committee said.
Daddy Lumba, who began his career in the early 1980s, is revered for transforming highlife music with his distinctive voice, lyrical storytelling, and fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Over a career spanning four decades, he released numerous chart-topping albums and classic songs such as “Yentie Obiaa,” “Aben Wɔ Ha,” “Theresa,” and “Odo Ntira.”
Beyond his musical achievements, Daddy Lumba’s artistry inspired many modern Ghanaian artists, from Kojo Antwi to Kwabena Kwabena and Kofi Kinaata, all of whom cite him as a major influence.
His funeral is expected to bring together fans from Ghana and the diaspora, with tributes planned to celebrate his contributions to Ghana’s music, culture, and identity.
