Empress Gifty Sues Nana Agradaa for GHS20M Over Defamation Claims

Ghanaian gospel singer and public figure Gifty Oppong Adorye, popularly known in the entertainment space as Empress Gifty, has filed a GHS20 million defamation lawsuit against controversial evangelist Patricia Asiedu, widely known as Nana Agradaa of the Heavens Way Church.

The legal action, which has attracted national attention, stems from derogatory and scandalous remarks allegedly made by Nana Agradaa during a live social media broadcast on May 13, 2025. The broadcast, aired on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, reportedly included a series of defamatory comments directed at Empress Gifty and her husband, Hopeson Adorye.

According to the writ of summons, the remarks made by the defendant implied that Empress Gifty is promiscuous, engages in bestiality, is an adulterous wife, and that pastors invite her to church programs in exchange for sexual favors. The comments further described the gospel singer as an imbecile, causing widespread outrage among her supporters and the general public.

The plaintiff claims that these statements were made maliciously and without factual basis, purely to tarnish her reputation and settle a personal score, possibly connected to Agradaa’s disagreement with Gifty’s husband. Lawyers for Empress Gifty assert that the content quickly went viral, with other bloggers and media platforms amplifying the defamatory claims, causing irreparable damage to her reputation both locally and internationally.

The lawsuit points out that Empress Gifty, a respected gospel artist and brand ambassador, has suffered significant emotional and professional harm. Her children, according to the complaint, have faced ridicule and bullying in school as a result of the public scandal. Additionally, a major international gospel program scheduled for August 2025 has been negatively impacted due to the controversy, with organizers allegedly reconsidering her participation.

Legal representatives for Empress Gifty argue that their client has been subjected to public ridicule, contempt, and disgrace, which has affected her career, endorsements, and personal wellbeing. They are seeking GHS20 million in damages for libel and slander, as well as a perpetual injunction to bar Nana Agradaa from making or repeating such statements.

Furthermore, the suit demands that all videos and audio recordings containing the defamatory remarks be removed from all of Nana Agradaa’s social media platforms. Empress Gifty also wants a formal retraction and apology, aimed at mitigating the damage caused by the allegations.

As the case proceeds, it highlights the growing tension between public figures and the misuse of social media platforms to disseminate potentially harmful content without accountability. The outcome may set a precedent for how online defamation is treated under Ghanaian law.
