A candlelight vigil has been announced in honour of celebrated Ghanaian gospel legend Yaw Sarpong, as family, colleagues, and admirers prepare to celebrate his remarkable life and lasting contribution to gospel music.
The vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, with a one-week observance to follow on Thursday, February 19 at Asoufia Park in Kumasi. The events are expected to attract gospel musicians, clergy, industry stakeholders, and fans from across Ghana, all gathering to pay tribute to a man widely regarded as one of the pillars of contemporary gospel music in the country.

Yaw Sarpong’s influence on Ghana’s gospel landscape spans decades. Known for his spirit-filled compositions and powerful stage presence, he used music not only as entertainment but as a ministry tool to spread messages of hope, repentance, and faith. His songs, deeply rooted in biblical teachings and traditional Ghanaian rhythms, resonated with audiences across generations and denominations.
Throughout his career, Yaw Sarpong remained committed to using music as a vehicle for evangelism and social reflection. His lyrics often addressed moral values, perseverance, and devotion to God, themes that endeared him to many households in Ghana and beyond. For many gospel musicians, he served as a mentor and inspiration, demonstrating that one could achieve excellence while remaining grounded in ministry.
The upcoming candlelight vigil is expected to be an evening of worship, reflection, and heartfelt tributes. Organisers have indicated that gospel artistes will perform some of his well-loved songs, while clergy and colleagues will share testimonies about his life and impact. The atmosphere is anticipated to be both solemn and celebratory, acknowledging not just the loss but also the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
The one-week observance at Asoufia Park in Kumasi will further provide an opportunity for the public to join the family in mourning and remembrance. Kumasi, a city known for its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, is expected to host a large turnout as admirers travel from different regions to participate in the commemorative events.

Organisers have extended an open invitation to all members of the creative arts community and the general public to attend. They emphasised that the gathering is not only for gospel musicians but for anyone whose life was touched by Yaw Sarpong’s music and ministry.
As Ghana’s gospel fraternity reflects on his journey, many agree that his contribution to the industry goes beyond chart-topping songs. He helped shape a movement, influenced countless careers, and strengthened the spiritual fabric of gospel music in the country.
The candlelight vigil and subsequent observance promise to be fitting tributes to a man whose voice and message will continue to echo in churches, homes, and hearts for generations to come.
