The Bono Regional Police Command has recovered five firearms and assorted ammunition following a shootout that left a suspected armed robber dead, marking what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in efforts to combat organised crime in the region.
At a press briefing in Sunyani on Monday, Bono Regional Police Commander, Joshua Coppson, detailed the incident, which stemmed from intelligence gathered on February 11, 2026. According to police, they received information that a robbery gang was planning to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa–Gonokrom highway.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, officers deployed surveillance teams to monitor the area.
“In the early hours of February 12, 2026, officers advancing towards a parked motorbike in the area came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The police returned fire. A search conducted at daybreak led to the discovery of one male suspect who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was found dead with an AK-47 rifle beside him,” DCOP Coppson explained.
A subsequent search of the surrounding area uncovered additional weapons and ammunition. Items recovered included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, and a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, along with 34 extra rounds. Officers also retrieved an AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds and 10 additional rounds, as well as 39 rounds of BB cartridges.
Police further recovered a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask, and a set of talismans believed to have been in the possession of the gang.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

DCOP Coppson assured residents that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the suspected robbery gang who may have escaped during the exchange of fire. He appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist law enforcement in making further arrests.
The Bono Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, particularly along major highways frequently targeted by criminal groups.
Authorities say intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations will continue as part of broader measures to enhance safety and security across the Bono Region.
