Amaarae Becomes First Ghanaian to Perform Solo at Coachella

US-based Ghanaian-American artiste Amaarae made history on April 13, 2025, as the first Ghanaian solo performer at the prestigious Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, the event marked a significant milestone not only in Amaarae’s career but also for Ghana’s music industry on the global stage.

Performing during the first weekend of Coachella 2025 — a festival renowned for its global audience and eclectic lineup — Amaarae delivered an electrifying set that spotlighted her distinctive sound and West African heritage.

In addition to performing her own critically acclaimed tracks, Amaarae honored Ghana’s vibrant music scene by incorporating songs from fellow Ghanaian artistes, including Eazzy, Joey B, La Même Gang, and the Asakaa Boys. As she took to the stage, she passionately celebrated her roots, chanting “Ghana” and inviting the audience to wave the Ghanaian flag, which was proudly displayed throughout her performance.

“A lotta the music you just heard is from my home country, Ghana. I love my country so much,” Amaarae exclaimed to loud cheers, affirming her deep connection to her heritage.

Adding a dramatic and symbolic touch, Amaarae stunned the crowd by cutting off her long hair live on stage. The act drew both applause and admiration from the audience and added emotional depth to her performance. She used this moment to announce the title of her forthcoming album, Black Star, slated for release in the summer of 2025.

Born Ama Serwah Genfi, Amaarae has lived in Ghana, Atlanta, and New Jersey. Her cross-cultural experiences have heavily influenced her music, which blends Afropop, R&B, alternative, and electronic sounds. She first gained recognition with her debut EP Passionfruit Summers in 2017, followed by the critically acclaimed The Angel You Don’t Know in 2020.

Her international breakout came in 2023 when her hit single Sad Girls Luv Money featuring Moliy earned Record of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards. Since then, Amaarae has emerged as a global ambassador for Ghanaian music.

Her appearance at Coachella not only cements her place among international music icons but also opens doors for more African talents to take center stage at global music festivals. Amaarae’s performance was not just a personal achievement, but a proud moment for Ghana and a powerful reminder of the country’s growing cultural influence on the world stage.
